Helsar de Zarcero

Every year, we walk along the paved roadway that separates Finca Santa Lucia from microbeneficio Helsar de Zarcero, gazing over the coffee trees at the spectacular view of Costa Rica's West Valley and I'm consistently amazed. Overall, Santa Lucia is a small farm, or so it seems, but the quality is high.
Part of Costa Rica's "Micro Mill Revolution" Helsar de Zarcero was built in 2005 by Ricardo Pérez and brothers Marvin and Felipe Rodriguez to process the coffees from each of their three farms. Focusing on quality processing, the micro-mill slowly expanded into processing coffees for farmers across the region. Today, Helsar processes coffee for about 30 producers in the West Valley.
I'll admit that my initial interest in a coffee from Finca Santa Lucia started as an homage to my little niece, Lucy. For the most part, coffees from Santa Lucia are processed using the washed method. Other processing methods are kind of in the experimental phase to see how they turn out. As fortune would have it, some of the coffee from Santa Lucia was being honey-processed while we were there. Raked out across the covered patio was a batch of red honey processed catuai. We scooped up a couple handfuls for a smell and were handsomely rewarded with strong aromatic notes of Manila Mango - that small, sweet golden yellow mango from SouthEast Asia. It's a favorite fruit of mine, the aroma rocked our world and I knew it was going to be a special batch of coffee this year. I claimed it immediately.
In the cup, the Santa Lucia is bright, lively and juicy with beautiful notes of maracuya (passion fruit) and citrus. A winner!
