Finca El Guaje "NataMaya" - No Longer Available

Hermann and Nena Mendez
Juayua, Sonsonate, El Salvador

Owned by renowned Bronx pediatrician Hermann Mendez and his wife, Nena Ortiz-Mendez, Finca El Guaje had been abandoned for fifteen years until Hermann and Nena purchased it in 2005. The Mendez' renamed the farm after their two daughters, Natalia and Mayita, hence the monicker "NataMaya."

Located on the Cerro del Aguila mountain (Eagle Mountain), NataMaya cultivates 62 hectares (about 153 acres) of coffee, most of which are Pacas and Bourbon varietals, at an altitude between 1270 to 1600 meters, utilizing trees and cortinas as breakers to protect the coffee from the harsh winds of the region. In addition to the coffee, 32 hectares of land are dedicated strictly as forest preserve with a variety of old-growth, indigenous species that include cypress, oak and cedar.

A local community, known as Canton Ojo de Agua, resides within the farm, whose members have inhabited this area for over 200 years. Due to its isolated location, the Mendez Family has worked tireless to build a health clinic (staffed by a doctor), a primary school, new soccer field, water tank and latrines through support from the SQ Foundation and our friends: American coffee roasters Ladro Caffe and Zoka Coffee.

Because of our limited timeframe this year in El Salvador, we were not able to visit NataMaya but our visit to the sister farm, Finca Talnamica, reassured us that the Mendez family is doing serious work at NataMaya. Once harvested, the coffee cherries are bagged and then transported by truck about 25 kilometers to the Beneficio Cuatro M in Apaneca-Illamatepec. Once at Cuatro M, the coffee is immediately processed that evening and laid out to dry on the concrete patios by sunrise.
