The Cup of Excellence is the most esteemed award given to the very best coffees produced in a particular year. Rwanda is a recent newcomer to the CoE scene and this Nyakizu Lot 19 was chosen by a select group of national and international judges.

Winning farmers are given the award during a national ceremony recognizing those farmers as quality producers. The positive impace on the quality of life for the farmer and their families is permanent as auction money is often spent on farm improvements or family education, which can change their economic livelihood for the long term, even if they do not win every year.

Lot 19 from the Nyakizu Cooperative Washing Station (CWS) is from the Kobakanya Cooperative in the Nyaruguru District in southern Rwanda. Seventy-eight small-holder farmers produced this washed bourbon coffee grown at an altitude of 1819 meters.

The international jury awarded a score of 85.69 (out of 100) - noting aromas of raspberry, lemon, brown sugar, dark chocolate and caramel. A distinct orange/lime acidity with fruity body and a long, juicy finish.

Total production totaled 2,279 pounds earning an in-country auction price of $7.30 per pound. We purchased this coffee during the CoE auction in a buying group that included our friends at Royal Coffee New York and Cosmic Cup Coffee in Easton, Pennsylvania.
